There have been 15 global instances of brake assemblies collapsing resulting in one crash.

Stellantis Recalls Hybrid SUVs Worldwide

Stellantis has announced the recall of 54,000 hybrid SUVs over concerns of a brake pedal malfunction. The affected models include the 2024-2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale and 2024 Dodge Hornet plug-in hybrid SUVs. The issue involves the potential for the brake pedal to disengage, posing a safety risk to drivers and passengers. This recall affects over 21,000 vehicles in the United States, 2,280 in Canada, and 134 in Mexico.

The global recall also includes 30,517 vehicles outside North America. Stellantis has documented 15 reports of brake pedal assemblies collapsing, with one crash reported but no injuries. Dealerships are tasked with fixing the issue by reinforcing brake pedals. In the meantime, the company advises using the electronic parking brake or the automatic emergency braking system for added safety.

Impact on U.S. Market and Customer Communication

Of the total recalled SUVs, 21,069 are in the United States. Stellantis has sold 15,566 units of the Dodge Hornet and 2,737 units of the Alfa Romeo Tonale in the U.S. this year as of September 30. The company plans to send notification letters to the affected vehicle owners starting October 24, 2024. Owners are urged to contact Stellantis customer service or visit mopar.com/recalls for more information. Alternatively, customers can reach out to the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline or visit nhtsa.gov.

Stellantis has assured that the affected brake pedals will be reinforced with a bolt and nut by authorized dealers. The automatic emergency braking system, which activates unless deactivated, and the electronic parking brake provide interim safety measures. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has assigned the recall campaign number 24V752000 to this case.
