Dolton Mayor Faces Allegations and Controversies in Re-Election Bid

Burning stack of money in flames

As Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard seeks a second term, her leadership faces scrutiny amid allegations of financial mismanagement. Henyard announced reelection on Facebook calling her supporters to volunteer. Despite Henyard insisting on strong voter support, her mismanagement caused an investigation. In April, FBI members entered the Village Hall Lobby to look at Dalton’s financial records.

Henyard’s Controversial Re-Election Bid

Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard, often dubbed the “Dolton Dictator,” has initiated her reelection campaign. Her tenure has been embroiled in controversies, including allegations of financial mismanagement and extravagant spending. These accusations have led to calls from residents and colleagues for a change in leadership, fueling criticisms and allegations against her administration.

Despite these allegations, Henyard remains resolute, maintaining that she will receive strong support from Dolton voters. The upcoming Democratic primary in February is expected to be a crucial battleground for this contest. Henyard, facing opposition from Jason House and the Clean House slate, is determined to run a strong campaign.

Accusations and Federal Probes

Henyard’s administration has come under federal scrutiny, having received subpoenas related to the mayor’s roles in Dolton and Thornton Township. Critical reports by Trustee Kiana Belcher and an independent investigation led by former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot have raised serious concerns about her fiscal policies. These include accusations of using village credit cards for personal expenses.

“What a slap in the face to everybody that resides in 60419 zip code,” Trustee Belcher remarked, highlighting the town’s dissatisfaction with Henyard’s leadership. Her words echo the sentiment shared by many residents.

Henyard’s financial woes are further underscored by the sharp decline in Dolton’s general fund balance. Reports indicate a drop from $5.61 million in April 2022 to a deficit of $3.65 million by May 2024, raising alarms about her fiscal responsibility as mayor.

Defiance Against Adversity

Despite mounting legal troubles, Henyard remains defiant. A recently filed lawsuit against several village trustees, the Dolton Park District, the village clerk, and the village administrator reflects her resilience. Her attorney’s statement captures this unwavering determination: “I am running for reelection for Mayor, and I have no doubt that the people of Dolton will give me their overwhelming support and mandate.”

As Henyard continues her campaign, the upcoming election stands as a pivotal moment for Dolton. Her tenure’s controversies and achievements will play a deciding role in shaping voter sentiment. Whether resonating with the town’s aspirations or deepening its discontent, the outcome remains to be seen.
